Board FAQ

  • Forsyth’s Board of Trustees focuses on three areas critical to the success of Forsyth:

    1. The Board of Trustees selects, evaluates, and supports the Head of School, to whom it delegates the authority to manage the daily operations of Forsyth School, including curriculum development, faculty and staff evaluation, etc.

    2. The Board of Trustees develops broad institutional policies that guide the Head of School’s management of Forsyth School.

    3. The Board is accountable for the financial well-being of Forsyth School.

In the conduct of its official business, the Board of Trustees acts only as a whole; individual trustees have no authority to act unless specifically authorized to do so by the Board acting as a whole; even then, the individual represents the Board as a whole in their actions.

  • Forsyth’s Board of Trustees is composed primarily of parents of current or former students. New trustees are typically elected to serve a three-year term and may be elected to a second term.

  • Forsyth’s Board of Trustees holds five regular meetings throughout the school year in October, December, February, April, and May. Special meetings may be held if and as needed.

  • Executive: The Executive Committee consists of the officers of the Board of Trustees, one or more members-at-large appointed by the President, and the Head of School. It develops the annual plan and priorities for the Board of Trustees, sets the agenda for each meeting, and schedules reports from Board Committees, the Head of School, and other administrators. The Executive Committee also acts on behalf of the board to address sensitive or urgent issues between regular meetings.

Development: The Development Committee directs and supports efforts toward the Forsyth Annual Fund, capital projects, and endowments.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging: The DEI&B Committee actively supports the Head of School’s vision for belonging. It develops, informs, and reviews what is measured as it pertains to DEI&B. The DEI&B Committee also liaises with the family community and reports to them regularly. It promotes and facilitates culture-building and recommends diverse candidates to the Trustees Committee.

Finance: The Finance Committee, together with the Assistant Head of School for Finance & Operations and the Head of School, is responsible for developing and monitoring Forsyth’s long-range financial plan and yearly operational budget for board approval. It also develops broad personnel policies and makes recommendations for overall employee benefits, including determining appropriate compensation levels for the long-range financial plan.

Plant & Land: The Plant & Land Committee identifies long-term solutions to Forsyth’s facilities needs and determines how facilities can support the curriculum effectively.

Trustees: The Trustees Committee coordinates the annual identification, recruitment, and orientation of new members to the Board of Trustees; the recommendation of board officers; the self-assessment of the Board of Trustees; and the evaluation of the Head of School. It is also charged with helping the board formalize its processes and institutional memory to build upon past accomplishments and lay the foundation for future success.
